NEWS RELEASE

RELATIONS/BOARDS

Poughkeepsie, New York, February 20, 2012-Theatre pioneer and trailblazer, Dr. Rodney K. Douglas, producing the two-act play, The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial from his sick bed, announced today that veteran actor John Le Fever, will take over the role of director of the play based on Herman Wouk's Pulitzer Prize winning novel, "The Caine Mutiny." The Play runs for only four performances from Friday February 24 through Sunday February 26 at The Cunneen Hackett Theatre, located at 12 Vassar St. in Poughkeepsie.

Wouk's novel covered a long stretch of time aboard the USS Caine, a Navy minesweeper in the Pacifc. It begins with Willis Keith's assignment to the Caine, chronicles the mismanagement of the ship under Philip Francis Queeg, explains how Steve Maryk relieved Queeg of command, gives an account of Maryk's court-martial, and describes the aftermath of the mutiny for all involved. The play covers only the court-martial itself. Like jurors at a trial, the audience knows only what various witnesses tell of the events on the Caine.

Mr. Le Fever, making his debut as a director, states, "I have been learning the ropes since 1964 and have been acting in The Mid-Hudson Valley for over twenty years". He has appeared in The Man Who Came to Dinner by Kaufman & Hart, A Lie of The Mind by Sam Shepard among others. John has appeared on stages such as The Rhinebec Center for The Performing Arts, The Ancram Opera House, River Arts and Performing Arts in Woodstock, and The Egg in Albany among other venues.

About Dr. Rodney K. Douglas
Actor, philanthropist, pioneer and trailblazer Rodney Douglas was playing in an off-Broadway play with James Earl Jones when he got word of a casting call for Shakespeare's "Merchant of Venice", a work he had performed many times. After attending the call, he was informed that "there were no parts for Negroes" in the play. He was appalled by this incident, and that became the impetus that gave birth to The New Day Repertory Company which was founded in 1963.

About New Day Repertory Company
New Day Repertory Company is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to provide quality experience for actors and audiences that is intellectually challenging, provocative, socially relevant, and culturally enriching. The Company performs both the classics and contemporary works. New Day remains dedicated to producing theatre that promotes racial harmony by speaking to the universal human experience. In keeping with its goal of providing professional training and performance opportunities for all actors, the company has evolved into a well-recognized pioneer in the area of non-traditional casting. Ultimately, however, the heart of New Day's mission lies in its continuous outreach to schools and community centers, as well as economically disadvantaged and culturally under- served communities in the Mid Hudson Valley and surrounding areas.

Subject: [council] From Inside Job to the 99% Spring
Date: Feb 23, 2012 8:31 PM

Hi, MoveOn council folks, & folks who attended recent "Inside Job" parties. Attached are the Notes from the MoveOn Upstate NY conference call 2-15-12, following up on "Inside Job" movie parties, & discussing upcoming MoveOn plans.

Our primary focus is on the 99% Spring - plans to train 100,000 Americans in non-violent direct action from April 9 - 15. Please see http://the99spring.com/ & see our wide coalition partner list at http://the99spring.com/letter.html & see more below.
We would like to have at least one training for each council area. We are encouraging councils to post a placeholder event before we have the venues for the training; Place to post training: http://civic.moveon.org/event/events/create.html?action_id=268 .

We should be having upcoming meetings for our Councils & coalition partners to start planning the 99% Spring Trainings. More info should be coming from Council Organizers and/or myself. Please let us know if you are interested in meeting, to begin planning 99% Spring trainings.

Also, if you are interested, please fill in the Council Interest Survey at https://docs.google.com/a/moveon.org/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dFk5TmJGaHlDendCZ3NYOU9QMU91Vnc6MA#gid=0

A. Goals of the 99% Spring Training:
1. Build the power of new economy campaigns to win concrete results for our constituents: homeowners, students, workers
2. Engage thousands of new people in the 99% movement
3. Developing the 99% Narrative and shaping electoral debate
4. Pushing elected officials to choose whose side they're on: 99% vs. 1%
B. Our Role in the Trainings
· It's important to recognize that we are NOT leading on these events. We are taking the lead on recruitment but this is really a coalition effort. So this means that we cannot refer to the recruitment system as BOB but instead we need to call it the 99% recruitment system. I know this may seem like semantics but it isn't it's also very important for legal reasons. So please be sure to keep this in mind and remind your Council leaders. Here is the link to the 99% Spring website. Please share with leaders and again push this out as the 99% Spring website not as a MO website.
C. Link to post in the 99% Recruitment System + link to the vetting guidelines
· Place to post training: http://civic.moveon.org/event/events/create.html?action_id=268
· Vetting Guidelines: https://docs.google.com/a/moveon.org/document/d/1T18ip-w4Z-5PWuIG8Ze3R8b53M11R9rbP29Rjk0_3co/edit
D. Timeline
1. Councils post events by 3/2 - either placeholder or actual event
2. Council organizing meetings 2/27 - 3/5 - (agenda coming soon)
3. Phone banking [follow up + initial host prep] will begin on 2/28 and continue to 3/23.
4. Train the trainers (in person for hosts in 12 cities) on 3/24 + 3/25 (tentative)
5. March action - during week of 3/12 (more details to come)
6. Attendee recruitment - ongoing for councils
7. Virtual training on working with allies - 2nd week of march (tentative)
E. 99% Spring Training Host FAQs

What are the 99% Spring Trainings?
Inspired by Occupy Wall Street and the fight for workers in Madison, Wisconsin, the 99% will rise up this spring. 100,000 people from across the country will gather in community centers, churches, schools and homes from April 9-15 to receive training on non-violent direct action. We will apply what we learned from these trainings to take action on our campaigns to win change in our communities. Click here [include link to the recruitment system] to sign up for a 99% training.

What will the training be about?
The training will provide an opportunity to bring our movement together so that we can equip ourselves with the skills we need to do take direct action this spring. Right after we are trained, we will apply what we learned by taking action against the banking industry and Wall Street with actions all across the country. The training will focus on three key areas:
· The economy. We will tell the story of our current economy: How we got here, who is responsible and what we can do about it. We will talk about what a new economic vision could look like that represents the values of the 99%.
· Non-violent direct action. Knowing our movement history will help us tell the current story of the 99%. There is no better way to take action then by learning what social justice movements have done in the past. We have a rich history to draw from that can guide us as we take action this spring.
· Take action. We'll learn how to take action by developing and preparing for tactics that will help build our movement power. We will then use this information to take action on our own campaigns to win change.
I just decided to host a 99% Spring Training, what are my responsibilities?
Thank you! As a host, you'll need to find a venue, identify a trainer or trainer team, and organize logistics. As the training approaches, you'll also want to make reminder calls to people sign up to attend your event. If you expect more than 50 people at the training, you might also want to ask a friend or a local organization to co-host the training with you.

If I sign up to host a training, am I also committing to lead the training?
Yes. If your training is in a big city and expect a lot of attendees, you'll want to find a co-trainer and participate in the "Train the Trainer" program. You should have one trainer per every 50 attendees.

How can I learn to lead the training myself?
There will be in-person regional trainings for trainers in 12 cities across the country on March 24 and 25. We'll follow up with more details soon. We strongly encourage you to attend these regional trainings. If you can't make it and we can't find a trainer to lead your event for you, there will also be a virtual training to participate in.

When should I organize my training?
The trainings are between April 9 - 15. Your training should begin no earlier than 10:00AM and end no later than 9:00PM. In order to get the most out of the curriculum we suggest that you schedule either a full day training (7 hours) or a half-day training (3 hours). You will want to take this into consideration if you are planning to host an event in the evening on a weekday.

What kind of venue can I use?
It's best to use a public location that is centrally located in your community, like libraries, community centers, or churches. Trainings can also take place at a private residence. The goal is to train as many people in our communities as possible so please make sure that your venue can hold at least 25-50 people. If you are in a big city, you'll probably want a venue that can hold 100-200 people.

Can I post an event even if I don't have a venue?
Yes! Finding a venue is one of the first things you will want to do--but it's best to post your event in the online system so you can start receiving more information about the trainings. When you sign up for your event you will have the option to indicate where your venue will be held, you can use your own address as a placeholder. Once you identify a venue, you will want to change those details immediately.

Do I have to develop the training materials?
No, we will provide the curriculum training and content for you. There are many coalition organizations and individuals working together to develop the materials and trainings we will need so that our trainings have suitable content.

What organizations are part of The 99% Spring training?
Click here for the full list: http://the99spring.com/letter.html

How will I know if another group is planning a training in my area?
There is a team of organizers that will be reaching out to every event host. You will either receive a phone call or an email about other events in your area. You will receive a phone call from an organizer from one of the coalition organizations that are organizing the 99% Spring Trainings.

Who should I contact with further questions?
You can reach out to your member organization to get questions answered or your organizer. You can also email help@moveon.org with any questions that you might have.

What is non-violent direct action?
Non-violent direct action (NVDA) is any form of direct action that does not rely on violent tactics. Some examples of NVDA are the Mississippi Bus Boycotts; The 2003 Immigration Freedom Rides; and most recently the Home Occupations, where community members occupy a home that is being threatened with foreclosure.

New Video Project from OPK: The Media Working Group is now engaged in a new project to create a series of video vignettes for distribution by OPK. Each 60 second video will consist of one person telling viewers why they're part of OPK. The idea is to show the public the faces of OPK and the myriad reasons why you joined on and continue to participate. What we're looking for now are participants willing to write up a 50 second-long statement they can practice before filming so that their segments are coherent, well thought out and to avoid the "hems and haws and er's and uhhhhs" of an unscripted session. This will make production easier and so that we can shoot each segment in a single take. If you'd like to participate, drop us a note at press@occupypoughkeepsie.org within the next few days.

On Sunday, February 19, a Know Your Rights training was held at Christ Episcopal Church in Poughkeepsie, directly before the Occupy Poughkeepsie General Assembly. Eleven attendees heard attorney Valeria Gheorghiu, a member of the National Lawyers Guild based in Kingston, discuss how to assert our constitutional rights as well as strategies for interacting with law enforcement officials. Gheorghiu led the group through role-playing exercises and answered questions regarding First, Fourth, and Fifth Amendment rights as well as other constitutional and legal protections. We have rights only to the extent that we are aware of them and exercise them, so educate yourself and others. To organize your own training or obtain pamphlets, contact Andrew Sawtelle at andrewsawtelle@riseup.net. More information is available from the NLG at http://www.nlg.org/resources/know-your-rights.

The next meeting of Occupy Poughkeepsie Direct Action Working Group (DAWG) will be on Friday, February 24th at 5:30pm in the basement of Christ Episcopal Church at 22 Carrol Street. Please be in attendance so we can do some planning for actions, and move toward the March 1st National Day of Action for Education.
From Kathy and Tom of our Mom and Dad's Support Group: When the Occupiers were evicted from Hulme Park, Tom and I helped remove a lot of stuff that was in the "kitchen" area. I finally unpacked all of the stuff we were storing. We have recently donated the non-perishable food, plastic ware, paper plates, bags, foil, etc. to the Grace Smith House. From what we still have here, Vonn claimed her ladle, and we're bringing Karl his pie plate and slotted spoon tomorrow. There are still various pieces of silverware, some utensils and a few baking trays, if anyone recalls something they might be missing. There is also a large tan mixing bowl with mushroom prints on the side. Another item is a large clear glass Pyrex quiche or deep pie dish with a rippled edge. If any of this belongs to any of you, and you would like us to hold it for you, please e-mail and we'll work it out. If no one responds within a few weeks, we would like to make another donation to the Grace Smith House. If any of you are storing stuff that you would like to donate, just give me a call and I will put you in touch with the person you need to contact, as I cannot include that info online. Write Kathy and Tom here.

OPKer Andy Papula has written a new song, "I Accept Responsibility" which you can see on his Youtube channel here.

At our General Assembly on February 17th, we talked about some of the problems with metal detectors and police at Poughkeepsie High School and questioned why they were there. Our Foreclosure Defense Working Group has now visited more than 60 families in the city. The nationwide student action on March 1st was also discussed.

OPKs Stone Soup program continues in Hulme Park on Friday evenings from 4:30PM until 6:30PM, just in time to get you to our Friday evening GA at 7PM. Come on out, have some soup, bring some food to share, bring a drum and Occupy Hulme Park with some good food and cheer and like-minded people.

OPK hosts an informal "think-tank" program each Monday night at 7PM at Christ Episcopal Church, 22 Carroll Street. Topics are as wide spread and varied as are those who attend. Feel free to drop in and add your views.

OPKs Musicians Working Group: A group of spirited musicians comes together to meet, play music and exchange ideas. The group meets as needed to play together and rehearse. If you'd like to join, please contact Andy Papula at (845) 242-6760
